Converting cassette audio to digital on PC

I have a Pyle PT-659DU, with a usb direct out to plug into my windows laptop (LG Gram 16) When I set up Audacity to record/transfer the audio, it is all garbled and unusable. I hve th efollowing setting in Audacity:
MME > Microphone USB PnPSound Device > 2 Stereo Recording Channel > Headphones (for audio playback), anf I have it set for 44100Hz and 24 bit. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure Windows “enhancements” are turned OFF. It’s one of the most common problems around here…

Some of those settings can foul-up the sound in weird ways. I believe some of the settings are trying to kill everything except spoken voice. In any case, you don’t want digital audio stream monkeyed with while recording.

Thanks DVDdoug! I’ll give it a try and let you know.
