My daughter’s laptop crashed and was unresponsive. It eventually did a system repair and restarted. Unfortunately the Audacity program was no longer there. There are dozens of music files still saved to the desktop however were useless without audacity. We tried reinstalling audacity but the files will not open. Are they completely lost or is there some way of restoring the files?
Audacity projects are made from an AUP file and an associated data folder (Audacity project structure). So you can try searching for AUP files.

For long-term and “everyday” use you should be exporting as regular WAV or MP3, files, etc. that you can play on Windows Media Player, or other audio player software, or on your phone, etc.
Besides being usable “everywhere”, these are single-files they are harder to mess-up and easier to back-up.
Is there an error message?
