Compression to bass heavy

I digitize a lot of allbums and cassettes……The signal is never strong enough so I use normalization and compression to bring the volume up….

But many times it makes the sound “bass heavy”….

My compression specs are….,.

Threshold -18db

Noise floor -40db

Ratio 4.1:1

Attack time .20 seconds

Release time 1 Sec….

Any recommendations on the settings to make the compression effect less “bassey”….

Thanks

Steve

ooops….Audacity 3.1.3…..

Another ooops….

:slight_smile:ass should read base….

use a compressor plug-in whose detector circuit ignores the bass, e.g. TDR Kotelnikov | Tokyo Dawn Records , to avoid the bass pumping effect.

Sometimes it’s an iterative process… You compress and then go-back and EQ.

You might try limiting instead of compression. It’s easier to set-up and there are usually fewer side-effects.

If you don’t know this, limiting is a kind of fast-compression that pushes-down the peaks. Then you can use make-up gain or normalize to bring-up the overall volume.

But the limiter doesn’t have the noise-floor adjustment so it’s going to boost the noise along with everything else.

DVDdoug….thanks for the tip…..I have not used limiting and I will experiment with it…
