Clicking noise occurs with equalizer

I am using the graphic equalizer to add some bass and a little treble to a wav file. I was careful not to oversaturate any of the frequencies, i.e. no permanent red light on the output level meter. When I play it back through Audacity or after saving it and playing it back on my media player, I get clicking or scratchy noise at places where some frequencies were noticeably increased. Has anyone had this happen to them? I used to use the sound editor of Roxios Creator software the same way on wav files on a PC and never got any noise like this.

Lots of odd clicking damage vanishes when you remove the DC level before you do any processing to the file.

Effects > Normalize > Remove DC Level (don’t select anything else).
