Changing the Hz when recording spoken audio via microphone

Hi

I have difficulties when I’m recording spoken audio via microphone.
I need to get a wave file in the end with 8000 Hz, but when I record the spoken audio in audacity, it automatically turns into 44100 Hz even if I change the Hz to 8000 in Preferences.
Help anyone?

Changin to 8000 afterwards only distorts the sound in a horrid way, as you might know

Because of which part of the forum you have posted on, we have no idea which version of Audacity you are using or what your operating system is. After changing the default sample rate, are you restarting Audacity?
