Hi,
I would like to use the Change Pitch effect in my video editing program, but have looked high and low in Audacity and online to find a VST or dll (or whatever) associated with Change Pitch that I could import into my editor. This simple effect works great for my purpose, but I search in vain… unfortunately, only encountering all the fancy FX.
Any info or advice much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Frank
Audacity 2.1.0 (don’t remember install, prolly zip) , Windows 10 Pro
If you install Audacity 2.1.2 supplied by us ( http://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows ) then Change Pitch is included, under the Effect Menu. You can’t reuse it in other applications. It’s a LADSPA effect compiled into the application and doesn’t have a standalone DLL.
If you really like Change Pitch then the solution would theoretically be to export the audio only from the video editor, import the audio into Audacity, then put the replacement audio after Change Pitch back into the video editor.
If your video editor cannot export audio only, add FFmpeg to your computer then drag the video file into Audacity and it will extract the audio and import it for you.
However Change Pitch is not suitable for that job in Audacity 2.1.2 because it may slightly change the length, which would desynchronise the video. Use Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift instead.
Audacity 2.1.3 when released will have an option to use the Sliding Time Scale algorithm in Change Pitch, which will mean the length won’t change.

Thanks, Gale. A few more questions from one not terribly technically proficient -

How/where do I do this?

OK… (repressing here my inclination to rant about how much I dislike change in my virtual world) I hope through subsequent updates I can maintain consistency in this one important character’s voice. All I do now (Audacity 2.1.0) in Change Pitch is to leave the Pitch at 8 and set Frequency/Percent Change to -25 to get exactly what I want. I just now tested Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift (see attached) and was able to replicate the voice… though there seems maybe the slightest hint of electronics in this voice version. Hard to tell, but I guess I can live with it.
When I go to update, could I maintain the present Audacity 2.1.0 in a different folder (perhaps at C:\Program Files (x86)\Audacity2-1-0) in case I don’t like the changes and want access to this reliable version?
Thanks again.
Hokay, trying uploading the image again. Is this the way it is best done?

Click the link that I posted. Here is the link again for how to install FFmpeg: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#ffdown.
Yes, although in some aspects (such as if you like to use “Open with” in Explorer) Windows won’t be able to distinguish the two Audacity versions.
Also, because of changes we made to the Audacity installer, if you uninstall 2.1.0, it will also remove the listing for 2.1.2 in Windows “Programs and Features”. To get that 2.1.2 listing back you would have to install 2.1.2 again.
Another way would be to download the ZIP version of 2.1.2 to try it out. You don’t install that, just right-click the downloaded ZIP file and choose “Extract All…” to extract the contents to any folder you like.

All the controls are interlinked, but it is the Percentage Change that Audacity uses to produce the result. So if you ddon’t need a specific key signature or frequency change, just adjust “Percentage Change” to suit.
Just to reiterate that the length will be changed slightly.
