when these things show up in other threads
let’s collect them here for reference
please! just the software you saw noted elsewhere and a link
if we clutter this thread up with discussion
then it will be useless to people
if this is useful then maybe it will get stickied someday

There is a huge list of audio plug-ins on KVR.
This is their catalogue/database page: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php
Personally I use Recover My Files
because it usually maintains the old file structure with the old file and folder names.
For a free tool, try Pandora Recovery.
It puts lots of older files in “unknown folders” so even a search won’t really tell you where the files were actually deleted from.
COMPRESSORS LIMITERS GATES
Does anyone have any comment on the comparible performance or ease of use between Audacity’s on-board compressor and the one from http://pdf23ds.net/software/dynamic-compressor/?
The “hard limiter” is included in the optional “set of over 90 LADSPA plug-ins” that you can download here: http://audacityteam.org/download/plugins
I can’t really comment on “good” but there are three here you could try (Windows VST):
Grancomp3 (separate stereo and mono compressors) in BuzComp Free bundle:
Miscellaneous free programs
cnet has many free audio related programs
(plus trialware, shareware, and demos)

There’s quite a few free and open source video eding applications to choose from on Linux.
Here’s some other popular ones:
freq vs db level
click repair and more
Currently there are four applications available for use. For more information and download follow the links below.
Other really useful (free) applications:
xplorer2 lite http://www.zabkat.com/x2lite.htm
The pro (non-free) version is even better, but the free “lite” version is highly functional and useful for managing files.
… There are quite a few free bulk-rename utilities available. http://www.google.com/search?&q=free+wi … ulk+rename
SOME REAL TIME SOFTWARE
(to kill the vuvuzela buzzing but can do other things too)
Apparently it’s available for windows too. In Linux I think you can pipe sound through sox and have something similar to realtime audio processing…
realtime audio processing software (linux type)
JACK (http://jackaudio.org/) based apps, which might be able to do the job:
trying to record both sides of a Skype call. Pamela Professional and Business can do that (not the other two) and I think Total Recorder can do that as well.
