Catalina and Audacity 2.4.0 - no waveform recording

I have updated to latest version(2.4.0) for Catalina.

It appears to record (using either soundlower 32 or 64 bit settings in Mac audio preferences); but there is no waveform showing during recording.

On playback there is quite thick and splkey(for want of a better description) waveform which neither modulates on play back nor shows any change in amplitude at all. But the playback “sounds” OK on the internal MacMin speakers.

How do I get to see the recording waveform; as currently none of the three styles/types for that work/show.

I had the 2.3.3 working OK for a while (using the terminal workaround) but then last evening even that lost the waveform?

I did catch a brief glimpse of the record waveform - but it was literally there and gone in a flash (using 2.3.3).

I then upgraded to 2.4.0 to see if that resolved the problem - and it hasn’t

Hopefully someone here more familiar with Audacity than I am at present can help resolve this?

And does one still need to run the terminal routine with 2.4.0?

Thank you en-avance.

Cheers.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! To everyone who worked on the new release of 2.4.0 that now works with dumb Catalina! I can’t thank you enough for this whole program…it’s a joy and I have loved it for years and use nothing else for my voiceovers! Thanks again…
