Cassette to USB to Computer

Trying to connect an old Sony Cassette player to my Surface Pro 4 running Win 10. I have a 3.5mm jack in the cassette player headphone outlet with a USB on the other end plugged into my one Surface port.
Audacity does not recognize the cassette player. No USB Audio Codec or anything similar in the Mic drop down menu.
I’m trying to record older cassette tapes to digital.
I’ve exhausted my “Google machine” and am at a dead end. I’m suspecting my 3.5mm to USB cable is not up to the task. What do you think? Any suggestions?

If Windows “sees” the USB device it should work with Audacity. Make sure to plug it in before starting Audacity.

Right-click the Windows speaker/volume icon, select Recording Devices (or input devices) to see if it shows-up, and make sure it’s enabled.

Yes, Windows does not see the devise… anywhere. Does not show up in Recording devises or input so I think I need to get a higher end cable for “audio” with a 3.5 on one end and a USB on the other. The one I got was an inexpensive (Ritz-Mart 3.5mm Male AUX Audio Jack To USB 2.0 Male Charge Cable Adapter Cord) cable.
Hoping a different cable will work. Thanks for the input.

If you have access to a desktop/tower computer you can connect headphone-out to line-in on the soundcard.

Or the Behringer UCA202 is popular and inexpensive (although maybe not as “cheap” as your 3.5mm to USB “cable”.)

Do NOT buy a regular “USB soundcard” because they are like laptops with only mic-in and headphone-out (no line-in).
