Audacity 2.0.3
Ubuntu 13.10
As the title says I cannot use any menu items. I can’t even import anything, and when I hover over the “recent files” tab (or what ever it’s called) I can see the recent files, but they are greyed out. I can open files with Audacity by right clicking them, and all the toolbar items work correctly, but none of the menu items are available.
I can see all the options, so all the packages
And yes, I have tried to select a part of the track and press the stop button (the yellow one).
So what can I do?
“Stop” would have been my guess.
We should wait for a Linux user.

Did you English wrong there?

You actually can use File > Recent Files to open files when playing (and even when recording) so that is not the cause.
Have you already imported a very long file when this problem happens? Or does something else cause it, like opening an effect or a dialogue?
Are you using Unity, Gnome fallback or something else for the interface shell?
Have you tried resetting Audacity Preferences then rebooting?

I have a similar problem. Menus in audacity are only right clickable.
Using opensuse 13.1 KDE 4.11.5 and audacity 2.0.5
So please tell us how to reproduce the problem. When you start Audacity, I presume you can use the menus. What steps do you then take that cause the menus to grey out?
Have you pressed the yellow Stop button then selected the audio to which you want to apply an effect? Do the keyboard shortcuts still work?
Or do you mean that the menu bar is missing (does not exist)?
Have you tried resetting Audacity Preferences ( Audacity Manual ) ?

I had the same menubar problem happened on reboot this morning (using openSUSE 13.1, KDE 4.13 and Audacity 2.0.5):
Menus in audacity are only right clickable.

Following the advice in the Audacity Manual worked:
Resetting preferences to factory defaults by initializing the audacity.cfg settings file…
Exit Audacity.
Open audacity.cfg [to be found in ~/.audacity-data/] in a text editorand remove all the content except the first line NewPrefsInitialized=1
Save the changes to audacity.cfg and restart Audacity.
I hope this saves somebody some time.
