Can't record

I asked this question a while back, but could not advance thru this issue even with suggestions.
I will try again, since I am now trying to record using the latest Audacity.

Ordinarily, there are four drop downs - The left drop down contains “Windows direct sound” and the far right drop down contains such things as “speakers, high def. audio” But the middle two drop down boxes are BLANK

I am using a Win 10 fast computer, and have no other issues playing sound.

Hi. The empty dropdown boxes correspond to Recording device and the Recording channels. You need to check first that the recording devices are being detected by Windows and that they are enabled. In Windows 10 use the Windows Settings app - System - Sound and check the Input devices section.
