can't record when headphones are plugged in

Hi
I am using 2.0.3 with windows 7
I can record from windows media player and Youtube OK until I plug in my headset, then nothing. I remove the headset from the jack and it starts recording again.
Any clues?

Yes, I am using a USB headset with microphone.
If I buy analogue earphones will this work?

I want to record music and monitor with headphones to hear the quality and not wake up the whole house

In that case, all you need is some (conventional - not USB) headphones.
If you have headphones for an MP3 player or similar, then you should be able to use those. Test it out with “any old headphones” before you spend money to check that it can do what you want.
