Can't record via aux in/adaptor, etc

I have the latest version of Audacity, an aux in cable, an adapter to go between the aux in cord and the usb-c port and the laptop is running on Win11. My cassette player/boom box has both an aux in port and headphones port. No matter which port I use and/or which input option I use (wasapi, MME, whatever), I can’t get Audacity to pick up the audio through the cords and records badly just between boombox speakers and laptop mic.

Any help would be appreciated.

Select the USB device as your Recording Device instead of your microphone. And DON’T select anything that says “loopback”.

There didn’t appear to be an option to choose the usb to record with/through when I was in Audacity.
