Can't record on Macbook running Big Sur and 3.7.7

I have decided to digitize my vinyl using 3.7.7 running on a 2015 Macbook with Big Sur. My input to the computer is a usb-c cable terminated with rca’s running from my phono preamp output. The system sound preferences on the Mac recognize the usb cable as does Audacity. The system security setting allows Audacity to use the microphone.

When I try and record an album Audacity just does nothing when I hit the record button, there is no movement of the progress bar. There also does not seem to be any input onthe vu meters, just low level noise. I can monitor with headphones so I know the preamp is working. Also, when I plug my Umik microphone into the computer, Audacity recognizes it and records fine.

We need to know first, whether the sound arrives at your Mac:

If you play something via your cable (please give more details about it), do you see any reaction in your Mac’s system settings? At the very bottom, there is a “volume meter” which should show you the incoming sound volume.

Try moving the sound input volume slider (above the “volume meter”) to the right if it is not yet there.

After, if we know this works okay, we can deal with the settings of Audacity.
