heres my problem , iam using windows xp ,realtek Ac97 audio, leaving my setting on audacity to microsoft sound mapper , have the option of using the realtek Ac97 on audacity, in windows only have the realtek Ac97 no microsoft sound mapper is on pc must of lost it ,even if i change settings to both audicity and windows to realtek Ac97 same problem ,so leaving audacity set with defaults for testing , have settings correct on audacity (stereo mix) set , under preferences( 2 channel stereo) , when i try to record streaming or a mp3 from my player ,i get the right meter pinned all the way to peak no control over it left channel meter records correctly , on the interface recording box i have only one channel recording correctly on top the bottom box is just a straight line so recording basically in mono, when i play back sound comes from only 1 speaker, when i change preference setting to one channel, i get a mono recording from both speakers , as a test i uploaded a stereo file from my mp3 files and it plays correctly on audacity playback in stereo , i down loaded a trail version of another stream ripper a pay for one and it records in stereo no problem at 96 bitrate tho, hope i gave enough info ,kenny
Hi Kenny
You emailed me through Sourceforge but I’m replying this way.
i am using windows xp
You may have got more response by posting in the Windows forum for Audacity stable or Beta. Those operating-specific Forums are meant for asking and answering problems.

SoundMapper is not an option in the Windows Control Panel because SoundMapper is only a “virtual” sound device that maps to whatever your default Windows device is at the time.
leaving audacity set with defaults for testing , have settings correct on audacity (stereo mix) set , under preferences( 2 channel stereo) , when i try to record streaming or a mp3 from my player ,i get the right meter pinned all the way to peak no control over it left channel meter records correctly , on the interface recording box i have only one channel recording correctly on top the bottom box is just a straight line so recording basically in mono, when i play back sound comes from only 1 speaker, when i change preference setting to one channel, i get a mono recording from both speakers , as a test i uploaded a stereo file from my mp3 files and it plays correctly on audacity playback in stereo , i down loaded a trail version of another stream ripper a pay for one and it records in stereo no problem at 96 bitrate
Does the other stream ripper use the AC97 Realtek device or its own virtual drivers? Realtek software drivers for AC97 motherboard sound are amongst the most buggy around. I’d suggest reading here:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#Using_the_Control_Panel
and try the two links in the grey panel “HELP ON RECORDING COMPUTER PLAYBACK OR STREAMING AUDIO”. Updating the Realtek drivers via Windows Device Manager is one possibility, another is using Freecorder which is a set of virtual drivers to record sound playing on the computer, so doesn’t rely on the motherboard sound.

thanks gale , already had updated the drivers , yes i understood the unrealibilty of the realteck ac97 guess iam stuck for now with them , went to using freecorder , could only get the toolbar to install on IE , firefox 3 beta 4 not allowing it because of their new security settings ps have audacity working on kids pc , their pc is like 12 years old works fine lol , thanks again kenny
