Can't record from line input (sound playback)

I’m running Xubuntu 18.04 on most of my machines. On two of my laptops, Audacity 2.2.1 no longer seems to be able to record line playback.

I’ve checked that I’m using Pulse: line (0 or 1, doesn’t matter), I have software playthrough disabled and pavucontrol shows sound on the monitor built-in audio stereo, where I can hear the playback, but audacity gets nothing at all.

Strangely enough, this seems to work fine on my desktop a;so running Xubuntu 18.04.

The laptops show an awful lot of input entities in audacity as well. I have a photo here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vydKZ4F-imucOR7UI97geJ_Y1JQdmb-S/view?usp=sharing

I’ve tried internal mic, mic and line, for default, pulse, even HDMI - nothing works.

That’s a lot of inputs :open_mouth:

Try this, so that we can get a good report of what Audacity sees:

  1. Reboot the computer
  2. Launch Audacity
  3. “Help menu > Audio device info”. Wait for the “info” window to appear, then click the “Save” button. Save the the info file somewhere convenient.
  4. Attach the “deviceinfo.txt” file to your reply (see here for how to attach a file to a forum post: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1)
