can't record and noise on playback

Audacity 2.1.0 Windows10
I’ve been using audacity for two months now and of a sudden when I play a recording on Ver 2.1.0 I get a lot of crackling and poping and garlarling sounds. This happens when the host is set to MME but not when the host is set to windows WASAPI.

When the host is set to MME I can record but when set to WASAPI I can’t record and I get this message.
Error while opening sound device. Please check the playback device settings and the project sample rate.

The sample rate is set to 48000Hz and the Default sample format is 32bit float.

Help please.

So are you saying the recording is completely perfect if you play it with WASAPI host - it is only a playback problem?

If so what is your selected playback device in Audacity?
