Can't open files

I’m on a 2014 Mac Air running Catalina 10.15.7 and Audacity 2.4.2.

Before I moved to Catalina, Audacity developed a quirk: I could no longer click on an Audacity or .wav file to open it in Audacity (which is set at my default app). The only way to open them was to start a new Audacity session and drag the file into it.

I downloaded the new Audacity tonight. Now I can’t open the files any way at all. I click and nothing happens. I Control-click and choose “Open” or “Open with Audacity”, and nothing happens. I start a new session and try to drag the file into it; I get a message that to open an .aup file, I need to click “Open file”.

Of course I’m on deadline tonight. :cry:

I’d appreciate any help at all, the faster the better!
