I am on Windows 7 on a laptop and using Audacity 2.1.0 that I just upgraded using the .exe
I am very new to this program and recording from vinyl in general. I am trying to use the USB connector that came with the player to record from that but not sure if I’m even doing this right. I have tried many different settings and buttons but every time I tried to record I am recording only from the microphone! The sound is horrible!
How do I record from the USB and not the microphone?
Select the USB device as your recording device. Plug the turntable into your computer before starting Audacity.
The only options I have to choose from are internal or external microphones. I plugged in the device prior to launching the software as well as scanning for new devices.
Just discovered that under the Windows WASAPI Audio host it does give me a USB option for recording but I am trying that and nothing records! It’s not even registering silence on the timeline, nothing.
All the Audacity hosts should see the USB Audio CODEC recording device.
What is the make and model number of the turntable?
2.1.0 is the previous Audacity version. I suggest you install 2.1.1 from us Audacity ® | Download for Windows. Look for and enable the “Reset Preferences” option half way through the installation process and confirm you want to reset preferences when you launch Audacity.
If the problem persists please try the procedure in the green box “Detecting USB and Firewire devices” on this page:

Thanks! I’m downloading that now.
It is a TechPlay ODC18-BS. It came with the CD of this software and said to plug in the USB, start up Audacity, then follow the software manual… I did try to find the device and USB in my windows devices and drivers and they say enabled, so I am not sure what to do with that. I will go through it again and see if I missed something.
Excellent.
I will mark this as [SOLVED] then.
If you have not seen them already, tutorials 3 through 6 here may be useful to you Audacity Manual.
