Can't get it to record

HI
I have Windows 7 and Audacity 2.0.5. exe version
I am playing a sound file in my browser, and I’ve set Microsoft sound mapper as the input, but it is recording a quiet, metallic noise which barely resembles the music playing.
I’m using an Acer Aspire 8930g laptop which has nVidia and Realtek HiDef audio installed.
Is it possible to work out why I can’t record on this?

Microsoft Sound Mapper is not a “real” device. It just represents whatever default settings your computer happens to have at the present time. My guess is that the default that is being used is the built in microphone.

If there is an option for “Stereo Mix” as the recording input, try that.
If not, see here for some other ideas of things to try: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html

I don’t have stereo mix, but thanks for that link I’ll look at that

Yeah linking the output with the input using a cable worked. I can’t monitor the sound which is a pain, but at least I can record, cheers
