Can't adjust Mic level

Hi, I’m using Fedora 20 on an RM laptop, kernel 3.11, an Intel soundcard, and Audacity 2.0.4.

I’m having trouble with the quality of recording. It’s terrible. There’s all kinds of hissing and clicking, I mean a lot, and I can’t adjust the recording level from within Audacity: The mic slide is grayed out.

I’m not sure what to do or how to fix this. If I record, and then use Noise Removal and then amplify, it does remove the noise, but completely destorts the actual recording.

Help required, and help appreciated.

You almost told us what you are recording.
