Cannot record narration

Cannot make a recording. I just used Camtasia last night, and tried to experiment with Audacity this morning. The tutorial were not helpful.
I can create a new project, and hit the record button, but no sound waves appear.

Audacity only records audio, not video.

If you need help please answer the questions from the pink panel at the top of the page and tell us exactly what you are trying to record.

If you are trying to record the audio from a video on YouTube or similar, please see Audacity Manual.

You can also download videos from YouTube and similar sites. Use your favourite search engine to find out how.

Audacity Version 2.1.0
Windows 8
Obtained the “.exe” installer

I mentioned recording with Camtasia just to confirm that my microphone is functional.

I am trying to record a narration that will be linked with a presentation to be used in an online course. I need a separate audio file for each slide otherwise I would just do a screencast with Camtasia.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks for the information.

You need to select the microphone you are trying to use in the Recording Device box in Device Toolbar. Here it is shown bordered in red so you can recognise it, using the internal mic:

If you are trying to use a USB mic, connect it before launching Audacity. If you don’t see the USB mic in Device Toolbar, try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.

If you are using a mic plugged into the computer mic port and you don’t see it in Device Toolbar, quit Audacity and enable the mic in Windows Sound ( http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#vistacp ). To do that, right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose “Recording Devices”. Right-click over empty space then choose “Show Disabled Devices” then right-click over empty space again and choose “Show Disconnected Devices”. Then right-click over the external mic and choose “Enable”.

If you need more help, please give the make and model number of your mic.

Gale,
Thank you so much for trying to help me through this.

I am using Andrea Electronics 3D Surround Sound Recording CANS

The settings seem to be OK.

We can’t see what you’re doing, so specifics are good. We live on model numbers and connection details. Checking your microphone with another program is good. That proves the microphone and computer are working, but now you need to establish the Audacity connection. The connections can be very different depending on where you started.

Koz

Are you using the USB adapter that comes with it?
Koz

Thank you Koz!
I had not thought about trying the USB connection. I did and it does!
I don’t know why it did not like my previous connectors, but this works great.
THANK YOU!
