Cannot record mike or line in live music

I am using Audacity 2.3.3 downloaded three days ago, Acer Aspire 3 64 bit Laptop
Audacity seems to load correctly, I have selected a new track to record but when I click RECORD I get :-
error opening recording device
error -9999 unanticipated host error.

I have tried internal and external mikes and guitar. Mike and line in both enabled on the laptop
I have updated and reinstalled the RealTec audio drivers supplied with the laptop and tried rebooting several times. From this I assume the input side of the equation is OK and the problem lies in the recording side.
Where am I going wrong? I hoped Audacity would help me through the current imprisonment but, alas, just more frustration.

If your computer has a single mic/headphone combo-connector you’ll need a special TRRS connector/adapter to make the microphone connection. (A regular plug will work for the headphones.)

Although the mic input should “work” with a guitar, it’s not “correct” (the impedance is too low) so you may not get good tone or good quality.
