Cannot record live audio

Windows 10.
Audacity 2.3.2

Hi,

Sorry, rookie question here.

I can’t get Audacity to record live audio and I am not sure why.

Does it mean that I have not got a soundcard? I’ve looked under “sound, video and game controllers” and it just says “Realtek High Definition Audio”. Does that mean that I do not have one?

If I do need to get one, what is a decent spec for a soundcard that just needs to record speech please?

Thanks!

Do you have a microphone or a laptop with a built-in microphone? We may need some more details about your hardware setup.

You’ll need to select the microphone (or microphone input, etc.) as your recording device.

If you still have trouble see Microphone problems after the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Amazing, I think that may be it. Thank you! I’ve changed the privacy settings and the in-built mic works. Yet to test the audio interface as I am off to work but it looks promising.

Thanks !
