Cannot record from online stream source

I have been using Audacity happily for some time with WindowsXP but now having a new computer with Windows 7 I cannot record from an online streaming source. The track window shows an ongoing line of silence, appearing as if the recording function is working but with no sound coming in, with Audacity not recognising the sound source.

I have read some of the answers to similar queries and see that some new computers block online recording. This does not seem to be the case with my computer, as I can use other recording programs which I find less friendly than Audacity.

My system:

Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) (build 7600)

You can use other programs that provide their own music pathway through the computer – in effect, forcing a recording. Audacity relies on the computer’s own drivers, soundcard and operating system to record internet audio. If any one of them drops the ball, then it stops working and you have to take other steps like additional software or other recording programs.

Macs don’t come with this recording feature and there are fewer and fewer Windows machine, too, because recursive recording like that makes the computer more unstable for casual users and business communications.
