cannot make record work - on ubuntu

I’m using ubuntu
Audacity 3.13
I installed from my distribution’s release

My problem is that I cannot get it to recognise any input. My headset doesn’t work, nor does the computer’s internal microphones. No idea what to do. I used to use audacity on windows, and that worked, but that was many years ago with different equipment.

Suggestions appreciated.

If you’re using kinetic, maybe you need to do a software update.
