Cannot install LAME package Mac OS Sierra [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,

I searched the forum and found one other person seemed to have this problem, but I didn’t see a solution. I downloaded the LAME installer, but when I drag the dylib file over to the “libs” shortcut on the installer window as per the instructions, I get an icon with a circle with a line through it, indicating the operation cannot be done. The instructions say the dylib file should go into the user>library>application support>audacity>libs folder. I found the user>library>application support>audacity folder, and noticed that there is no “libs” folder in that folder. So I tried creating a “libs” folder. Then I tried putting the dylib file into that folder myself, but Audacity couldn’t find it. I tried telling Audacity where it was using the “locate” button, but even when I told Audacity where it was, Audacity didn’t register it. I also tried using the installer to drag the dylib file over to the “libs” shortcut after I created the “libs” folder, but I still got that circle-with-the-line-throught-it icon indicating the operation can’t be performed.

I also tried downloading the dylib file using the zip link, and putting the dylib file into an “Audacity” folder in the “Documents” folder and telling Audacity where it was using the “locate” function, but Audacity still would not register the location. And I tried putting the dylib file into the raw “Documents” folder and telling Audacity were it is using the “locate” function, but Audacity still would not register that location either, and still keeps saying it cannot find the dylib file.

I also tried resetting the Audacity setting by deleting the contents of the “audacity” folder in the application support library, and then restarting Audacity so it will recreate those files. But it still doesn’t create a “libs” folder, and I still get the circle-with-the-line-throught-it icon indicating the operation can’t be performed when I try to use the installer and drag the dylib on to the “libs” shortcut icon.

So now I am out of ideas for something new to try. Does anyone have any suggestions? What I can’t figure out is why Audacity hasn’t created a “libs” folder in the “audacity” application support library, or why Audacity won’t register the location of the file, even when I put it just in the “Documents” folder, not even embedded in any other folders. I just don’t get it.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

It appears you are trying to install the 64-bit version of LAME. The 32-bit version comes with an installer that creates the “libs” folder in the correct location.

Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I am trying to install the 64-bit version. Should I just install the 32-bit version instead?

Yes for 2.3/0 you need the 32-bit library.

You can leave the 64-bit library installed - it will do no harm to 2.3.0 and will come in handy when you upgrade to the upcoming 64-bit 2.3.1 Audacity.

finally the answer to my problem also… I’m running Mojave and I’m trying to solve the same issue since last friday…
Thank you

Thank you so much, Bill and WC. That’s what I did, and Audacity is now working. Thanks again!
