Cannot do shortcuts

I tried on PC (Windows 8, what I’m using right now) and Mac (Not sure what version) to do shortcuts like cutting and deleting pieces but it doesn’t seem to work.

I load the clip, drag so a piece of the audio is highlighted. I assume this is how I edit but I can’t get it to work. It’s frustrating.
