cannot create digital file

Am using windows 7, audacity 242. Just downloaded this version. Pretty sure i am doing something wrong. Am trying to convert microcassett recording to a wav or mp3. Have device connected, hit record and see and hear recording but when i stop recording and go to see a file i donot see anything there. When ever i stop the recording shouldn’t a new file be created? Thanks

hit record and see and hear recording but when i stop recording and go to see a file i don’t see anything there.

Can you play it from Audacity? (You will have to select a valid playback device, like your soundcard/speakers.)

When ever i stop the recording shouldn’t a new file be created?

Not automatically. You have to export to WAV or MP3. etc., or you can save an Audacity Project. An Audacity project can only be opened in Audacity and you may not need one.

File → Export → Export as WAV.

As you may know, MP3 is lossy compression. If you plan on any further editing/processing, save any temporary work as WAV or as an Audacity project and compress to MP3 ONCE as the last step (if you want MP3).

thanks. When i hit the stop button to stop recording, i go to file and export but there is nothing there, no file to export. I am seeing and hearing the recording. It is not recording or not creating a file for me

Which “Export” option are you using?
What name have you entered for the exported file?
Where are you saving the file? (Which folder did you choose?)

DVD Doug, thanks for your help. I can see and hear audio and see the graphic but when i stop recording and try to export there is no file in the export window. Any ideas? Thanks

You have to give it a file name just like if you create/save a Word or Excel file. (I think it defaults to “untitled”.)

But, do you see something like this?
