Can still hear Right channel audio in Left channel

I’m using macOS 10.13.6, and Audacity 2.1.0

I have two audio files which I recorded on my Zoom H5 mic in stereo. I put both files into an Audacity project and changed both from stereo to mono. I then made one file 100% right channel and the other 100% left channel using the sliders.

However, listening on my earbuds, computer speakers, and the speakers embedded in my project itself, I can still hear right channel audio in the left channel. It is quiet, but it is loud enough to hear. Even when I put the file by itself in a new project, the same thing happens.

How can I get my mono files to truly be 100% right and 100% left?

This is for an animatronic sculpture, so because the right channel is leaking into the left, I have a mouth that looks like its lip-syncing to another mouth’s audio. It’s annoying!

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

Since you recorded with a stereo microphone there will never be perfect separation between the right and left channels.

The procedure you did in Audacity (split stereo track then pan the resulting mono tracks left and right) makes absolutely no difference to what you hear.
