Can I select stereo recording tracks from available tracks ?

I’m using Audacity 2.0 running on MacOS 10.6.8 with RME Fireface400 audio interface.
FF400 have total 18 inputs.
When I want to record only the inputs #1 and #2 of FF400, I can select “2 tracks(stereo)” in the pop up menu of Audacity.
But if I want to record inputs #9 and #10 of FF400, I should select “10 tracks”, though I want to record only the inputs #9 and #10.
Is it possible to choose any 2 inputs from 18 inputs of FF400, for the stereo recording ?

No, sorry that’s a feature request - something Audacity can’t do yet. We’ll record your vote for that.

If you are not already doing so, please make sure you use the latest Audacity 2.0.5 from: http://audacityteam.org/download/mac .

Dear Gale,
Thank you for your reply.
I have tried all versions since v1.3x through 2.05 and then using v2.00 because I felt it is most stable.
When I tried v2.05, sometimes small dropout occurs while playing back.
The condition when dropout occur is uncertain, but the problem seems to be disappeared when I returned back to v2.00.
I’m using Audacity on MacPro 2.8GHz Quad-core, 32GB memory, and MacOS10.6.8.
I’ll try again when next version is released.

Stuttering playback in Audacity is quite commonly reported on MacBook Pro, but no-one on Audacity Team has MacBook Pro. Most users say the problem started in 2.0.4. Are you saying 2.0.3 has the same problem for you?

Have you tried the recommended fix of adjusting Audio to Buffer in Audacity’s Recording Preferences? Try increasing or decreasing the buffer.

Are you sure your Audacity project rate is the same as the sample rate in the system Sound Preferences and in any RME settings you make?

Given members of Audacity Team don’t experience the playback problem there will probably not be a fix in future Audacity versions unless a PortAudio update happens to fix it, or unless a fix we made for “RingBuffer” after 2.0.5 release fixes it. Please try 2.0.6-alpha to test if the “RingBuffer” fix makes any difference: http://www.audacity.homerow.net/index.php?dir=mac/&sort=date&order=desc .

Thank you for your reply.
My computer is not MacBookPro but “MacPro”.
I think the dropout problem while playing back is only on Audacity 2.0.5.
Other versions of 2.0.1 to 2.0.4 have had another problems of timer recording, AIFF file reading, etc.

It might still be worth experimenting with “Audio to buffer” (look at any RME buffer settings too) and make sure sample rate and bit-depth are the same in Audacity Quality Preferences, in Apple Audio MIDI Setup and in any RME settings.

It could be that recent Audacity is more sensitive to settings, or it could be that the RingBuffer fix in 2.0.6 will help.

Dear Gale,
Thank you for your reply.
I have forgotten to inform you that the dropout on Audacity 2.0.5 occurred while playing back a pre-recorded audio file via “Build in” optical digital output of my MacPro.
