Hi I am new to audacity. I have been trying to edit my wedding video. Some of the speeches are quiet and there is noisy backgrond chatter.
I would like to reduce this chatter slightly and increase the volume of the person doing the speeches.
Is this possible, I appreciate any help
Background chatter is not “noise” in the sense that the Audacity Noise Removal effect understands it. You could try the Noise Removal effect but I expect that the results will not be good - it will probably affect the speech as well, in bad ways.
The people in the background are not noise. They’re performers. In general, you can’t separate different performers in a show. Noise is one constant sound through a whole performance like air conditioner rumble or microphone hiss. There is another requirement that at some time, the noise has to be available by itself alone so the software can tell what it is. This is the “profile” step.
Noise removal works in two steps. Tell the software what the problem is – the profile step where you play the noise by itself – and then the software tries to remove the junk from the show in step 2.
If the interference changes or you can never get the bad sound by itself for a bit, the noise removal tools will not work.
If you do want to mess with it anyway, only the noise removal in Audacity 1.3 actually works really well.
ok so if i cant remove the chatter, how can increase the volume of certain bits of audio when the speaker is too quiet. I dont want to increase all the audio just some bits.
how can i do that
Try the envelope tool. http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Envelope_Tool
In case you’re not horrified yet, the envelope tool is a wondrous thing and perfectly appropriate in this case, but it requires you to go through the show sentence by sentence and change the volume.
How close are you to retirement?
If the recording is stereo and if the chatterers were either side of the camera, (speaker front centre), then centre pan isolation may be worth a go.
[I wouldn’t be too hopeful though]
Thanks, no I am not horified as the bit of audio is only about 15 mins long and it is hubby speech so it is worth doing a good job on it.
thanks i will have a go with the envelope
