Can I leave audacity recording songs to detect silence and start new tracks itself?

Hi,

I’ve been using Audacity for years and I really love it. I find it indispensable despite having lots of other software. Thanks!

I would like to record live from Spotify overnight. I have tried downloading Spotify playlists using Noteburner, only to find Noteburner actually searches Youtube and downloads from there, so you end up with some compromised sound quality. I used to set a Spotify playlist going overnight and record a long take, and then trim out and name each track, which took a long time.

Can Audacity automatically detect silence between tracks and start a new track itself? There is a 5 second silence somewhere in Spotify which I can place between tracks, if that will make it easier for Audacity to detect the silence and create a new track to record the next song onto.

I’m using 2.2.2 on Windows 7.

Thanks very much

It’s tricky for us to answer this question as the Spotify terms of service specifically say that recording is prohibited.

I think I can safely say that if you have a recording that has silences between tracks, then you can use “Silence Finder” to label the silences, and then “Export Multiple” based on labels. This technique is commonly used for splitting tracks when transferring cassettes / vinyl to digital: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/splitting_a_recording_into_separate_tracks.html

Thanks Steve,
I have tried the label and export multiple method you suggested, which works really well.
Also, the page explaining about it is very explanative.
Thanks very much

Thanks for that feedback - good to know :sunglasses:
