Can I download the newest version to replace older version

Using Windows 10
I just got this gaget called “digitnow” and it came with Audacity 1.2.6 which I installed and I would like to upgrade to 2.4.2.
Question is: Do i have to uninstall 1.2.6 first to upgrade to 2.4.2 OR will the install of 2.4.2 just overlay the old version ?

Just to let you know I am copying my old cassette tapes to my laptop using the earphone connection from a boom box to a usb port on my laptop.
I assume that is OK.

Because you are updating from such an ancient version, I would recommend uninstalling the old version first.
During the installation, select the option to “Reset Preferences” when the option appears.
