Bug Report: Settings unable to select which of several displays' speaker to use

With Audacity 3.3.3 and macOS 13.6 (22G120) running on Apple M2 Max processor in Mac Studio computer with three Apple Studio Displays and one ViewSonic VP3256-4K display connected.

When I play audio, it always plays out of the speaker in the third Studio Display. In Audacity/Preferences/Audio Settings/Playback I can select the device using the pop-up menu. I can see all four of my displays. The three Studio Displays all have the same name, “Studio Display”, in the pop-up menu. The third Studio Display is selected. The settings menu allows me to change my selection to the second Studio Display, which I did and clicked OK. However, once I close the settings window and try to play audio, it still comes out of the third Studio Display. Checking the Preferences, the selection has reverted to the third Studio Display.

I suspect this problem is a result of the names of the three displays all being the same. I cannot do anythign about this fact. macOS does not allow the user to change the name of a display device. I can successfully select the VP3256-4K because it has a different name. I suspect that whenever there are multiple displays with the same name, Audacity will always choose the last one.

I have not been able to find any workaround for this bug. If I want to play audio from a Studio Display, it has to be from the third one.

You need to report bugs on Muse’s GitHub issues log (they are unlikely to see them here0:

See: Issues · audacity/audacity · GitHub

You will need a GitHub account for this, but those are free.
