I seem to have an input problem. The Boss Katana amp is detected by Audacity, but when I switch input to the Katana, the volume jumps to maximum. Otherwise, the Katana drivers are up to date and Audacity 2.3.3 functions. Any thoughts?

The first thought is to use the current Audacity which is 2.4.2. The Audacity versions slightly old can have serious problems.

the volume jumps to maximum.
That’s normal. When you record from a digital signal, Audacity assumes the volume settings have been done somewhere upstream. It’s part of the idea that Audacity makes the least changes possible when recording. For example, you can’t apply effects or filters when recording, either.

I upgraded to 2.4.2, uninstalled and reinstalled Boss driver. Same problem. The input volume is maxed and cannot be adjusted.
That is normal. If you check Apple (menu) > System Preferences > Sound > Input and select the Boss device, you should see “The selected input device has no input controls”.

Does this normality mean the Boss Katana is unusable with Audacity?
When you play through the amp, what levels do you see in Audacity? If the levels are in the red you’ll need to turn down the amp.

No, it just means you can’t control the recoding volume with software. You can adjust the volume after recording, or I assume the knobs on the amplifier can adjust the recording level.
Digital recording levels are not critical as long as you avoid clipping (distorting) the analog-to-digital converter.
If you are clipping the analog level has to be reduced before the signal is digitized. That’s normally done with a knob, although some devices allow you to control the analog signal with software. Sometimes the USB interface/device comes with it’s own control software, but usually it’s just a volume/gain knob, and sometimes there is no analog adjustment at all.
Well just for the “record” the Amp controls have no effect. I should add that while Audacity monitors, it will not record. Thanks all.
