Bass guitar sounds muddy & really low notes distort

Hi Folks, I’m relatively new to Audacity and I absolutely love it! My only criticism is that I cannot produce a really crisp bass guitar track and I’ve tried every fix I can see on line and/or think of. I’m using a Fender Precision Bass, directly into a Focusrite Red. It doesn’t matter if I playback into high quality studio speakers, or headphones… the bass sounds muddy & even at relatively low input levels, very low frequencies distort. Is there a magic bullet I’m missing? As m I doing something daft, Or am I expecting too much?

Worth checking to see if any recording “audio enhancements” are on, if so switch them off.

Thanks I’ll have a look.

I’ve checked and all ‘audio enhancements’, we’re off and so it doesn’t appear to be that. Has anybody got any other suggestions as to what might be causing the muddy bass sound and low frequency distortion? Cheers, Rob
