For a piece of software that I love so much and that I have used for seemingly decades to edit music, make remixes etc…when it comes to just recording my drums along to a background track… Audacity is is frustrating as ever. After I got everything set up this morning, it worked once and has not worked since then. No changes were made between the one shot and the rest of the day. Here’s what I want to do. Here are my connections.
I’m simply trying to record me playing drums on my e drum kit to a backing track in audacity. I’m using the M-Audio M-Track solo interface to try and make this happen. I’ve used this before and I’ve gone through similar frustrating moments where all of a sudden it works and then it doesn’t and then it does again rinse and repeat.
I have a quarter inch patch cord going from the back of my Alesis module (L/Mono) to the M-Audio box. It is plugged in to “Line 2” and the little toggle switch is flipped to the left where it says “line” as opposed to flipping it to the right where it has a picture of a guitar.
I have a USB cord running from the back of the M-Audio box to my very capable desktop. In audacity I have the drumless track loaded as I have done numerous times in the past.
In preferences under audio settings
Interface: HOST Windows Wasapi.
Under playback: device: speakers 3 - M-audio M-track solo and duo.
Under recording: device: Line 1/2 3 - M-audio M-track solo and duo. (I have tried setting channels to both mono and then stereo with no luck)
Project sample rate and default sample rate is 44100hz 32 bit float for the default sample format.
Latency
Buffer length 256 milliseconds
Latency compensation 130 milliseconds
(I don’t know if these numbers are causing an issue or not but again it had worked well once today but once only)
Once I hit record what generally happens is a new track (the recording track) appears below the track of music that I’m playing along to and the cursor just sits there.
It is certainly frustrating to have issues with this so often only to have something just amazingly start working again for no apparent reason. Any thoughts?
