Awful playback lag

I’m using Audacity 3.6.4, Windows 10. Any project using more than three tracks or longer than a minute or two, I get unbearable lagging and skipping during playback. I can barely listen to more than a few seconds before playback gets choppy, stops and starts again, whether or not I’m running any other programs or have other Audacity windows open or not makes no difference.

I cannot reproduce this on W10 with 3.6.4 and the latest alpha test build that I have for the upcoming 3.7.0

I ran two tests:

  1. Import 9 stereo tracks and play them
  2. Import a 2 hour stereo file

Both play absolutely fine on my PC with no lagging, skipping or choppiness
