I record 18 tracks from a Behringer XR18. I know that the lead guitar is on track 1, the bass on track 2, the main vocalist on track 3, etc. Each time I put the track data into Audacity, I have to manually rename all 18 tracks. Is there any way to write down the track names somewhere and import those names to over-write the default track names? Or is there a way to create Project (or a Project Template) where I do the rename once and then never have to do it again?

I discovered that the track name comes from the file name, so all I need to do is rename all of the files appropriately. That is, unfortunately, not that simple, but at least it is outside of Audacity. If someone can point me to a better solution, I am all ears.

Given that you are recording numerous tracks and, for all its good points, Audacity is only an audio recorder and editor I would suggest switching to a real DAW. I’m fairly sure that Waveform Free by Tracktion allows templates. There are some built-in ones. You could adapt the 'Band Recording ’ template to match your needs.

Thanks for your thoughts. For my purposes, Audacity is simple and familiar and adequate. I wrote a program to rename the track files, and now when I import the audio, everything is set up properly. I use Reaper (on a laptop) to grab the data, and then use Audacity to mix it down on my desktop. If Audacity could record the tracks directly, I would use it rather than Reaper, but there seem to be contractual issues which prevent that.

Fair enough!

Would you care to elaborate on this?

If you mean ASIO audio driver, that’s resolved … [Download Audacity with ASIO — Leo Wattenberg](https://leo.wattenberg.dk/2025/audacity-asio-download/)

Yes, I was referring to the ASIO audio driver license. Thank you for the link. This seems to be a one-time offer to deliver 3.75 with full ASIO support. Do the current Windows deliveries directly from the Audacity site also provide this full support? The Download page is pretty terse.

Back to the original topic, can one write a Macro to rename the tracks? I tried to fathom Nyquist and gave up: it was easier to write a Windows program. The Nyquist Panel was really unclear to me. I pushed text into it and clicked various buttons. I was told that Nyquist had returned a list. No error messages, and nothing changed in Audacity. All frustration and no clarity.

So, this page is no longer accurate?

> **[ASIO Audio Interface - Audacity Manual](https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/asio_audio_interface.html)**

How does one report such an error? The page was created just 2 months ago. Am I missing something?

All of this flailing is why it was easier for me to just use Reaper. Done and dusted. I wish I knew why this particular feature (multi-channel recording) remains so complex in Audacity.
