For decades I have used Audacity to time shift live radio when a download or podcast is not available. The first step is to use Audacity to record the live audio stream then save to an MP3 file to process as I need. Until recently, the Audacity recording stopped when the audio input reached its end but now it runs until I run out of disk space. There are (obviously) workarounds but these can be inconvenient. Is there any way of reverting back to how things were?
This behavior is usually caused by Audacity no longer detecting “silence” or stream termination correctly after an update or audio driver change. You can try enabling Sound Activated Recording under:
Edit → Preferences → Recording
Then set an appropriate activation level so recording stops when the stream ends or becomes silent. Also check whether your audio device/driver changed after a system update, since some virtual or loopback devices continuously output silence instead of properly closing the stream.
What gives you that idea?
This looks very plausible. I will test and investigate. Thanks.
My simple-minded workaround is manually stopping the recording when it is complete then editing the result. This is, as stated, inconvenient.
Helen,
Your suggestion has solved my problem. Thanks. You are truly a treasure!

Steve,
Forgive me but I am an old man, unfamiliar with the ways of internet forums. You tell me that Hellencharlezz is a bot. What nefarious motive could there be for this bot post?

Not “nefarious” in itself, but bot accounts frequently “warm up the account” with innocuous posts to build “reputation” before delivering their intended payload. Any remaining posts from that account on this forum would be harmless posts from before they fell foul of the forum security.
