AUP3 file size

Audacity Version: 3.0.2
OS: GNU/Linux, Manjaro

I know that this topic about the abnormal big size of the aup3 file has been discussed in other bug report:
https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/project-file-size-very-large/61718/3
https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/fixed-unusually-large-aup3-bug-with-single-quote-in-directory/61528/10

Because both of these bug reports refer to MS-Windows, I’ve opened this bug report for Linux. I can confirm the same issue for all of my Audacity 3.0.2 projects, although there is no apostrophe in any of the file names or paths. Nevertheless, my projects keep growing in size. One of them has a file size of 5.5 GiB, containing 8 tracks that sum up to 1.8 GiB when exported from that Audacity project (FLAC, 24bit, Level 8).

Thank you for your post. Note that our resident Linux guru is out.

If the tracks include periods of silence, then those silent portions will take up virtually no space at all when encoded as FLAC.
A better measure for the expected size of the project would be export all tracks as 32-bit float WAV.

A release candidate for Audacity 3.0.3 is scheduled to be available very soon. It contains some fixes that “may” resolve this problem. Please try it when it is available and let us know if the problem still exists.

As a possible workaround, you could export all of your tracks using “Export Multiple”, then create a new project and import all of the tracks into the new project.
