AUP3 file is Huge

I have been using Audacity for a long time and I have never seen the file sizes that I am seeing now. I have read and have noticed that I can delete the original files (FLAC for me) but I don’t want to do that but saving them both is a terrible waste of disk space. I’m a musician and I record my shows and all I do it edit the files so that I have mp3 files to distribute afterwards and so am only really making labels. I hate to delete the aup3 file as if I make a mistake or want to revisit in a year or so I don’t want to have to redo all the work I did. So is there a way to simply save that info so I don’t have to waste so much disk space?

The aup3 file contains a complete copy of all the tracks in the project for everything you do that you can undo by pressing Ctrl+Z. It is where all the undos are stored. The more you edit, the larger it becomes.

I do understand what it does, but the file is HUGE and there is honestly no reason for it being so in my case. so am wondering if there is simply a way of not including the files themselves. I normally covert my wav files to FLAC first then edit but this time around I forgot and then converted to FLAC and when I went back in I was able to still play the aud3 file which suggest to me that the wav file itself is now embedded (more like contained a kind of zip or package file) aud3. I read that that is the case and you could delete the FLAC files (not that anyone is suggesting that) but it’s really unnecessary for my usage. If there is no solution it might be time to look for something else to do this as I really don’t need to waste all that hard drive space.

When you have finished editing, you can delete the whole aup3 file. If you have exported your work in an uncompressed, lossless format, you can continue editing from there.

Don’t do any edits and the file won’t expand, but that obviously is not what you want.

The file will be “compacted” when you close the project, so you could just close the project when you feel it is getting to big for you. You will lose any “undos” when you do that.

Exactly HOW huge are we talking here?

The FLAC files in total are 2 gigs and then the aup3 file becomes 4.8 gigs (mind you all I’ve done at this point is import the files and save the project). Now it could be that size because I first imported about 4 gigs but 2 gigs worth were removed and I suppose could still be in the file, but none of that really matters I’m not going to be getting ride of the FLAC files and yes I can then delete the aup3 file but again I would be losing the work that I did, if I needed a correct, decided to add a new plug-in later or wanted to remaster the exported files. I do think that you’ve guys have answered my question though, sounds like there is no option not to have them included. Time to start looking to see how Audition works…

Yes, that is quite big but some of the corrupted ones I’ve repaired for other people have been 11-15 GB on occasion. You are right NOT to want to delete the aup3 files. Nobody would blame you for that. Since you are a musician, maybe you need a proper DAW rather than Audacity.

Yes I’m a musician but these are simple edits, just cutting the files to distribute them. A DAW is not needed (I have a number of them) as it would be over kill. Anyway, My question has been answered and for now will most likely just delete the file and lose my work.
