Audio only outputs from DisplayPort

Hello all! After much of the googles i can’t find a thread anywhere with my exact issue. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

My Setup

Mic: MXL Studio 24 USB

Sound 1: Motherboard built-in soundcard

Sound 2: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, Nvidia audio drivers removed

Speakers: Logitech stereo-mini plug in

Problem

Both the Windows built-in Sound Recorder and Audacity will not playback recorded audio through the built-in soundcard of my motherboard. They BOTH only playback audio through my monitor via DisplayPort.

Settings

In System → Sound the default device is Speakers (desktop speakers connected to built-in mb sound card via stereo mini).

Audacity will not playback audio via the desktop speakers. If i manually switch the output within Audacity to my monitor, it plays back. This works while leaving the system default to the desktop speakers.

But the Windows Sound Recorder, still using the Windows system default, will not play through the speakers. Only when i switch the Windows system default to my monitor will the Sound Recorder output audio.

Spotify and YouTube play fine whichever the default output is…

Musings

Audacity and the Windows Sound Recorder are suffering the same symptom. How is Windows treating recorded audio differently from any other audio source? Why is it forcing recorded audio out of the DisplayPort? And where is that even setup?

I just wanna sing :frowning:

Just wanted to provide an update for posterity.

Solution

While all Nvidia apps were still removed, I went into System → Sound → Volume Mixer. In the [Apps] section, I clicked “Reset sound devices and volumes for all apps to the recommended defaults” [Reset]. I then reinstalled NVidia WITHOUT the HD Audio driver and it remained working.

Failed Solutions

  • disabling the Nvidia High Def in device management (reboot)
  • uninstalling Nvidia High Def in device management (reboot)
  • uninstalling High Definition Audio Device aka Realtek mb audio (reboot)
  • Disabling the High Definition Audio Device that represented the Nvidia without the driver
  • completely uninstalling all Nvidia drivers and apps (2 reboots)
