Audio becomes static intermittently (3.7.1)

Hi,
I have been using Audacity to record my narration for some time now, but have been having a new issue ever since the latest update. I record normally, and spot checking the playback seems fine. The initial recording is done on a laptop. I then save the single-track recording to the cloud, then download it on my desktop PC to edit.

Lately, the playback when editing on my desktop PC will occasionally suddenly turn into static. Pausing and restarting the segment usually plays back normally again. The wave-form has no issues. However, when exporting as MP3, WAV, or OGG, the audio will occasionally become static in the exported file. When I drag this file into Audacity, the waveform is suddenly not normal looking, and the static is clearly there, and now it’s permanent.

I’ve tried turning off dithering, and I checked to make sure that the files’ bit rates and formats are the same (44100 and 32-bit float, respectively). I’ve tried exporting as a 32-bit WAV with the same intermittent static. I ensured that my CPU usage was not high. As far as I can tell, all of Audacity’s preferences (other than dithering) are untouched. The problem persists. The weirdest part to me is that the original waveform looks exactly as it should, and that if a section becomes static, simply re-playing that section works just fine as if nothing was wrong at all. But then the static persists in export.

I couldn’t seem to find my issue anywhere else, at least not in a way that was clear to me. I’ve tried what I could from my searches but am now at a loss. This has now happened on a second separate recording.

I added a short clip as an example of what the export sounds like, in case that’s helpful – this problem persists even when exported as a 44100 32-bit wav.

Any help at all would be appreciated! Especially as I really need to be able to actually submit work! Thank you

An update:
If I open the file on the laptop (on which I did the initial recording) there are no issues. It also exports correctly, seemingly also without issue. If I upload it to the cloud, then open the file on my desktop, then edit, save to cloud, and open it on my laptop again, there are also no issues. The problem seems to be with my desktop somewhere but all of my drives and so forth are up to date.

That sure sounds like a hardware or driver problem from the laptop sound card. Your symptoms would indicate that the audio data is fine, but the rendering of its output is problematic.
