Audacity won't run

I had audacity on my computer before and downloaded a new version and installed it but can’t open it. I get the message that audacity is already running on my computer. I spent a few hours with iMAC help making sure that audacity was not on my computer then downloading a new version and trying to open it but get the same message that it is already running on my computer. Anyone ever have this problem?

Go to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity. That location is normally hidden on macOS, so: copy the underlined text, then in the Finder click on the “Go” menu and choose “Go to Folder”; paste the text into the dialog and click “Go”. There should be a “Session Data” folder. Trash any file you find inside that folder.

Thank you so much - saved my day!

El Capitan 10.11.6
Audacity 2.3.1

I got the same response out of the blue having used Audacity since 2008.
There was no version running so I removed the older version and downloaded 2.3.1
Still Audacity would not open stating there was a version already running.
I found this post and followed the instructions but there is no ‘Session data’ folder in application support.
Any advice on where I go now?

Regards
Peter

On a Mac there are two “application support” folders. The correct one is hidden, so you have to follow Bill’s instructions exactly as written.
