Audacity won't open

Audacity won’t open on my computer when I’ve disabled all my security software. Please help!

I’m using Windows 8.1 64 bit and Audacity 2.1.2

Please try http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#launch.

You should not disable your security software unless you disconnect the internet.

Do you see a “Debug Report” window when you launch Audacity? If so, please save a ZIP report file using that window and attach it. Please see How to attach files to forum posts.

There is no debug report window because audacity won’t open.
I’ve tried the instructions in the link and they do not help.

There is a known case (now fixed for next release) that if you set Meter Refresh to zero, Audacity won’t launch precisely because it crashes with a Debug report.

You need to try everything there including resetting preferences, deleting pluginregistry.cfg and running an anti-virus scan. Deleting Users<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Audacity\ will reset preferences and plugins in one go.

Also as diagnostic, you can start Windows in Safe Mode and see if Audacity launches. If it does, then either your sound card or some process on your computer is the problem.

I’ve deleted the audacity folder in %appdata%/roaming and it still doesn’t open.
A virus scan won’t solve anything as I don’t have a virus.

Unless you do a virus scan you don’t know whether you have a virus or not right now.

I also suggest you try Safe Mode but of course it is up to you.

If you could launch Audacity before, think of what you changed in terms of new audio devices (real or virtual) or new audio software.

If a new/changed audio device is the problem, you could try the Windows Nightly Builds but I don’t think that is a very likely solution.

Please bear in mind that we can’t see your computer. The more you tell us, the better.
