Audacity will not open Audacity Project File

When I try to open a project I have saved, it gives me the message: “X is an Audacity Project File. Use the ‘File>Open’ command to open Audacity Projects.”

I did exactly that, and got the exact same message. I’m a little confused.

Me too. That message only occurs when Audacity is told to “Import” an AUP file.
Are you using Audacity with English Language?

You should be able to double click the AUP file from a cold start and it will open Audacity and install the show from the _DATA folder. Both of those have to be in the same location or folder for the show to open. They have to match. They both have to have the same basic name.

If you open your AUP file in your text editor, does it have semi-English programming like this:

Close the editor. Don’t let it save anything.

This is graphically cleaned up, but it’s an actual AUP file I used at one time. If your file is very tiny or has trash characters or no characters at all, it’s probably damaged and will never open the show.

That’s the thing though, the project data folder and the aup file are both right there on the desktop, yet it still doesn’t recognize it. I can open other projects just fine.

Please, if you need help, have a look at the pink panel at the top of the page and give us that essential information.

If you are really using File > Open… and Audacity still tells you to open it, it usually means the AUP is corrupted. So, please attach the AUP so we can see it. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1
