A couple of times, I’ve had Audacity stop in the middle of recordng with a message saying that the stoppage is due to either competition with other software for resources or to slow access to a storage device. How can I determine the actual cause, please?

Here is how you determine the cause.
Try running the program under different conditions, and when the problem stops happening when you have removed one of those conditions, you have found the cause.
Some things you can test for…
Using a local hard drive actually on the computer, versus a network or cloud storage drive.
Stopping any other program that uses your microphone, like Alexa.
Stopping all programs using a lot of memory, like an internet browser with 100 tabs open.
Stopping programs that get between your programs and your data storage, like a virus scanner.

Thanks; I’ll work my way through them. The files are being stored on a solid-state drive, so that should be okay.
