Audacity seems to not import all tracks

I used my Sound Devices MixPre 10ii to record a concert. I used all 10 tracks. The concert was about 1 1/2 hours, so my MixPre produced two polywave files.

I opened the first file into Audacity, and got 10 tracks (as expected). I then imported the second file, and got only 8 tracks. (For a total of 18 tracks, instead of 20). I verified that the second file also had 10 tracks by opening it as a new project. Sure enough, Audacity showed 10 tracks.

But, repeating the first process (opening the first file, and then importing the second file) again produced only 18 tracks.

I want to open the first file (getting 10 tracks). I then want to import the second file, and then, align the files sequentially, so that the first track of the first file, and the first track of the second file are joined sequentially and seamlessly. I want to do this for all 10 tracks.

Might anyone know why I am only seeing 8 tracks being imported from the second file?

Thank you.

P.S. If I reverse the order of files, I get similar results. That is, if I first open the second file, I get 10 tracks. If I then import the first file, I get 8 of the tracks contained in that file-- for a total of 18 tracks showing in the Audacity display.

I just want to be clear about my objective:

I have a file with 10 tracks. I also have a second file with 10 tracks. I want to concatenate (append) each of the 10 tracks in file two to its corresponding track in file one.

How can I do that?

Thank you.

I worked around the problem by opening the first file in a new project. Got all 10 tracks. Then, opened the second file in a new project. Got all 10 tracks. Then copied each track from the second project and pasted it at the end of the corresponding track in the first project. Then “joined” the clips.

Did for all 10 tracks, and now I have a project with the complete concert for all 10 tracks.

The import of the second file to the same project as the first file still fails, however.

If one of the tracks is corrupted or partially downloaded, Audacity may not be able to import it properly.

Thank you for thinking of a possible explanation.

However, I can successfully open both files in Audacity. By that, I mean that I start a new Audacity project, and then “Open” either of the files. The files open, and 10 tracks appear in the project. They are all 100% complete and playable. Exactly the same length. I can open either file-- just not both at the same time. (By “opening both”, I mean open one, and then import the other into the same project.

Regardless of which one I open first, the other imports with only 8 tracks-- not the 10 that are contained within each file.
